“Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards”

I just wanted to tell everyone how much I like this new Tom Waits release. As usual, it’s good, but this one is specifically interesting.

Basically, it’s a three CD collection, Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards. Brawlers contains mainly more hardcore stuff (think about Going Out West), Bawlers is a little more soft, and Bastards is just, well, hard to explain.

If you’re expecting the young Tom Waits, kinda like what he used to sound like back in Closing Time or even Blue Valentine, I’m afraid you’re wrong. King Kong for instance sounds a lot like it was meant to be on Real Gone (released almost three years ago). Actually, I really like where Waits went with Real Gone, I think he should go on like that and keep releasing psychedelic human beat box tunes. You could also compare it to Mule Variations, but either way, it’s just not quite the same thing.
So if you liked Real Gone, I’d say this release is definitely for you, but otherwise, save your money for something else.
